Generally speaking, the process involves a beneficiary who is outside the U.S., who has to apply for an immigrant visa at a U.S. Consular Post in the home country. There are various steps to the consular process, and, depending on the relationship between the petitioner and the beneficiary, it may be a quick process or one that could last several years.
